4 Steps on the Journey to Inner Peace

What lies behind us

And what lies before us

Are tiny matters compared

To what lies within us.

Bliss. Serenity. Calm. Inner peace is a deep and abiding sense of contentment and tranquility. Peace can sometimes be fleeting and we can find our sense of calm through many ways, a walk along the sea, a sunset, a smile from a friend. But often our mind gets distracted or life too busy. Luckily, true inner peace is not a fleeting moment, rather a natural state of calm awareness that resides within us. It's important to learn to connect to this reservoir of peacefulness even in the most difficult of circumstances. Like the ocean depths, inner peace is expansive and stable. You can learn to quickly leave the choppy, wild waves at the surface and dive into the deep calm.

Finding practices which will deepen your own sense of calm and also have a ripple effect on your work, relationships and ultimately the world are really important. You can choose to commit to a regular habit transforming your life and rewiring your brain. Today is the start.

Here are 4 important steps on the journey to inner peace...

1. Relaxation

Busy, stressed minds and bodies are roadblocks to inner peace. We require rest and relaxation to find our calm. Find your own way to quiet the mind and unplug from our busy lives. Book a massage, do a yoga class, listen to music, run a bath. Whatever it is that brings you peace, schedule it in every day. Inner peace lies just ahead.

Affirmation: I can effortlessly let go of any thoughts, concerns, or worries. My body is relaxed and at peace.

2. Grounded and Rooted

Our world is constantly stimulating. When we ground and root ourselves, we can withstand the stresses of life with more ease, grace and stability. Spend time with your family, your loved ones to feel grounded and supported. In everything you do, notice all the senses, touch, see, listen, feel. Be present to wake yourself into this moment.

Affirmation: My energy is centered, grounded and focused. All is well and complete in my world. I am safe.

3. Acceptance & Compassion

We waste a lot of our energy and happiness on stress created by our everyday resistance to circumstances that are beyond our control. When we change from resistance to acceptance, we can start to feel free and calm. When we start to self-love, accept ourselves just the way we are, just the way everything is we can start to feel connected with ourselves and others. It radiates and reverberates. Smile more. Do things that make you feel good. Hug more. Accept things you cannot change and gracefully go with the flow.

Affirmation: I am open to whatever the outcome may be. I accept myself, and my loved ones, just as we are.

4 - Gratitude

If we train our mind to notice our blessings, all the positive aspects of our lives, we will instantly become more satisfied and grateful. When we find gratitude our life becomes an abundant place of peace. Training ourselves to turn to a more positive state of mind can change our lives for the better.

Change those negative things you tell yourself into positive affirmations to help us move on from negative tendencies that cloud our happiness. Write down or say to yourself every morning, three reasons your are grateful.

Affirmation: I experience gratitude for everything I have in my life.
