Are you wondering where to head on your next surf trip? Choosing a destination for your adventure can be a tricky decision to make. There are so many variables, perhaps your looking for somewhere on a budget, or perhaps your travelling with friends who surf at all different levels, or maybe your with a partner who's not that into surfing. Or maybe, the world is so big you don't know where to start first! Well, thankfully we've been to, and surfed many places, so here's our top destinations for this winter.
1. Taghazout, Morocco
Taghazout in Morocco is the perfect place to head if your looking for a shorter trip and on a budget. Flights can be found with EasyJet for under £100 and there are plenty of surf hostels to stay in for £20 per night. We love Surf Maroc or Amayour Surf. Or better yet head to our surf and yoga retreat, more info here. The waves are pumping in the winter and you'll find plenty of spots to navigate between, check out our blog post on surf breaks here. The African sun beams down, so if your looking for a tan, there's plenty of beaches to get your vitamin D fix. The fishing town is buzzing through the winter with surfers and there's plenty of souks to get lost in if you fancy a bit of shopping. Morocco is an amazing place, the culture is like no other, so definitely one to add on the bucket list! 1 week is enough to enjoy Taghazout.
2. New Zealand
If your thinking about a longer trip and have a bit of money to play with then there is no where more incredible than New Zealand. This country is packed full of adventure, from hiking, kayaking, surfing, bungee jumping, it has it all! A perfect place to go if you fancy a bit of variety on your trip. The best way to see the sights is renting a camper, you'll be blown away just from the winding drives, we like Wilderness Campervans. There is free camping all over the country, from spots right next to the sea, to spots nestled up in mountains. The North Island is better for sunshine and famous surf spots, our favourties are Gisborne and Raglan. The South Island is colder, wetsuits and a lot of sea life, so beware before heading in! Don't miss the South, head to Kaikoura, you might surf with dolphins or killer whales. New Zealand has it all and it's full of magic. We love flying with Emirates and recommend at least 3 weeks here.
3. Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is a perfect mix of budget travel, but still you get to experience a tropical treat. The water is crystal clear and there are perfect reef breaks all along the coast. Flights can be found with Emirates for around £400 and your stay can cost as little as £7 a night. Food is cheap and amazingly tasty curries! We recommend heading south to avoid the crowds, a lovely spot is Madiha Surf House. Sri Lanka is a little bit tricky if your a complete beginner, as most breaks are on a reef with very little beach breaks. However, if your are a beginner SK Town and Horseshoe Bay are great spots for you, they also cater for intermediates, so if your in a group of mixed levels, perfect! If your wanting cocktails head to Mirissa, if your searching for culture head inland to Ella on a local train, or for a safari. If your feeling really adventurous, see if you can climb Adams Peak... but be warned, it's painful!
4. Costa Rica
Ahhhhh, sunsets and cerveza's! Costa Rica is a tropical paradise, a little bit more expensive than Sri Lanka but worth every penny. The country is full of deserted beaches, lush jungle, howler monkey's and wild waterfalls. There's no place better. The surf here is perfect for all levels, it's all beach breaks so soft and safe for beginners with bigger breaks for intermediates. Or if you prefer, read a book in the many hammocks, ride horses along the ocean or hire quad bikes to Montezuma waterfalls. It really is a tropical heaven, with everything you imagine. You can find direct flights from London with BA Airways for just £400! We recommend staying in Florblanca or coming along to our surf and yoga retreat in Santa Teresa. Pure bliss
